Biodex Unweighing System
Recovering from an injury, surgery or joint replacement often involves
extensive rehabilitation that must start as quickly as possible. However,
many patients are not ready for the stress of an extensive exercise regimen.
That is where the Biodex Unweighing System® comes in.
This outpatient service is available at the Outpatient Rehabilitation Care
Centers on the Brunswick and Camden campuses, and it allows a patient
to put less weight on his or her weakened or injured extremities while
performing rehabilitative exercises in a safe, secure, upright position.
How Does It Work?
During the initial visit, a Health System physical therapist will determine
with the patient if the Biodex Unweighing System is appropriate to be
included in the individualized care plan developed for his or her condition.
To use the Biodex Unweighing System, the patient is placed in a secure
harness which is attached to the machine. The therapist uses the system
to gradually lift the harness. As much as 40 percent of a patient's
weight will be supported. Over time, as strength improves and/or pain
decreases, less weight is supported by the system, gradually increasing
the amount of weight the patient bears as he or she improves.
This technology allows patients to participate in weight-bearing activities
faster and restore range of motion sooner. Best of all, because our therapists
are not physically supporting patients during their workouts, they can
concentrate on proper body movement.
