What is Aquatic Therapy?
Aquatic therapy, or pool therapy, is an exercise program performed in the
water. It uses the physical properties of water to assist with exercise
performance and healing. Physical therapists specifically tailor the aquatic
therapy program to patients’ needs. Swimming experience is not necessary
because most exercise is performed standing in the water.
Who should consider Aquatic Therapy?
Numerous diagnoses can be treated with aquatic therapy, including rheumatoid
arthritis, osteoarthritis, low back pain/surgery, fibromyalgia, sprains
and non-weight bearing injuries. Patients who cannot tolerate land weight
bearing therapy are candidates for aquatic therapy.
