Medical Oncology - Cancer Care Center at Southeast Georgia Health System
The medical oncology units in our Cancer Care Centers offer the latest
pharmaceutical advancements in a positive, relaxed environment. They are
staffed by our board-certified medical oncologists, registered nurses
trained in the administration of chemotherapy, and other support staff.
Many of our nurses hold nationally-recognized oncology specialty certifications.
Medical oncology involves the use of powerful drugs, called chemotherapy,
to kill cancer cells, control their growth or relieve pain symptoms. Administered
orally, by injection or by intravenous infusion, chemotherapy may require
one drug or a combination of agents, depending on the type of cancer and
its rate of progression. It can be used in combination with other treatments,
such as surgery or radiation, in an effort to eradicate cancer cells.
If chemotherapy is prescribed by your oncologist as part of your treatment
plan, it will be discussed in detail with you along with any other treatment
recommendations.
