Camden Sleep Management Center Receives National Accreditation

ST. MARYS, Georgia: Feb. 29, 2012– The Southeast Georgia Health System Camden Campus Sleep Management Center’s commitment to providing quality care has been validated through a five-year program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).

"Accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine is the gold standard for excellence in centers diagnosing sleep disorders. This assures both patients and referring physicians that all testing is performed and interpreted according to well recognized national standards,” says C. David Sudduth, M.D., medical director of the Health System’s Sleep Management Centers. “The accreditation also requires that all physicians and testing personnel be graduates of recognized training programs, and credentialed in their individual roles and they are required to stay current on new trends in the profession."

According to Timothy P. Bryant, MBA, RT(R)(N), manager, Radiology and Cardio-Pulmonary Services, all of the Center’s sleep technologists are also registered polysommographers. “Anyone undergoing a sleep study should ask if the technologists are registered,” Bryant says. “This ensures that the staff members have all the proper training to provide the best care possible.”

To receive a five-year accreditation, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional health care as designated by the AASM. The accreditation process involves detailed inspection of a center’s facility and staff, including an evaluation of testing procedures, patient contacts, and physician training. Additionally, the facility’s goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine currently accredits more than 2,200 sleep medicine centers and laboratories across the country. Both of the Health System’s Sleep Management Centers are AASM accredited.

“The American Academy of Sleep Medicine congratulates Sleep Management Center - Camden Campus on fulfilling the high standards required for receiving accreditation as a sleep disorders center,” said Nancy Collop, M.D., AASM president. “The Center is a significant resource to the local medical community and will provide academic and scientific value in addition to the highest quality care for patients suffering from sleep disorders.”
