BRUNSWICK, Georgia: Feb. 9, 2010 – In recognition of Black History
Month and the extraordinary accomplishments of African Americans who helped
change the social and political landscape of America, Southeast Georgia
Health System invites the public to a special celebration on Thursday,
Feb. 25, at the Senior Care Center-St. Marys, 805 Dilworth St. This special
event, featuring the Darien Geechee Shouters, will take place at 5:30
p.m. in the Activities Room.
The members of the Darien Geeche Shouters are all of Georgia Geechee Gullah
ancestry. Believing that people without a history are a lost generation,
the group was organized in 1992 with the overall goal of preserving and
protecting the Geechee heritage. The Darien Geechee Shouters are committed
to embracing, preserving, and protecting the historical and cultural heritage
of the Georgia Geechee legacy through song and dance for the benefit of
present and future generations. The Darien Geeche Shouters’ cultural
goal is to keep the original “shout” as authentic as possible
from 1800 to the present.
This special celebration is open to the public and free of charge. Light
refreshments will be served. For more information about the celebration
or any other Health System events, classes, or seminars, visit the online
calendar at www.sghs.com.
