Good carpenters care about their craft. The job requires focus, flexibility and attention to detail. The same is true of nursing. The skills that Brian Thomas, R.N., brought to construction sites for 30 years he now brings to patients at Southeast Georgia Health System. Mr. Thomas’ path to becoming a nurse was circuitous. “My son was working as a hospital aide,” he says. “I spent an hour trying to encourage him to go to nursing school. We reviewed the pros and cons. I didn’t convince him, but a year later, I had convinced myself!” When the housing market crashed and carpentry jobs disappeared, the pros of nursing became even more clear. “You can go anywhere in the country and get a job that pays decently and offers good benefits,” Mr. Thomas says.
