March 18, 2021 – Southeast Georgia Health System recently presented
the DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses to Jenny Grantham, R.N.,
and Nancy Hooker, R.N., in recognition of the kindness and compassion
they provide every day to their patients.
A registered nurse and assistant nurse manager in the Health System’s
Maternity Care Center on the Brunswick Campus, Nancy Hooker, R.N., was nominated for The DAISY
Award by her patient, Maci Hobby, who gave birth to a baby girl while
in Hooker’s care.
Excerpts from the nomination include, “Nancy Hooker single-handedly
and completely changed our experience at the maternity care center. She
was just getting off working the night-shift when I started having contractions.
Instead of going home and getting the much deserved sleep she needed (especially
in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic), Nancy stayed with us until the
delivery of our sweet and precious baby girl. She stayed by our side and
guided us through the entire process. After our baby’s birth, there
was a complication with me having a postpartum hemorrhage. Nancy stayed
right by our side the entire time. She was there through the entire process
as a friendly face. She spoke with us like we were family, and helped
out, going above and beyond our highest expectations. Nancy even brought
us dinner after our delivery and hemorrhage-control procedure. The next
night she worked, she even helped us with the baby so that we could get
a couple of hours of sleep. Without a doubt, she is the reason we had
such a wonderful experience. I do not believe the Health System would
be the same without Nancy.”
Jenny Grantham, R.N., is a registered nurse in the Health System’s
Cancer Care Center on the Brunswick Campus. She was nominated for The DAISY Award by patient
Victoria Certain, whom she sees regularly for treatment.
Excerpts from Grantham’s nomination include, “My disease and
medical condition require regular phlebotomies, which I have at the Infusion
Center at Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick. If the Daisy Awards
are presented to those with “A Healer’s Touch.” then
Jenny Grantham is a most worthy candidate that I nominate with my deep
gratitude for her loving care. I have been fearful of needles my whole
life, but when I walk into the Infusion Center and see Jenny’s smiling
face, I feel assured that all will be well. Thanks to her confident and
gentle manner my fear of needles has vanished. I have been blessed to
be treated by Jenny for years now, and I believe I am a very fortunate
patient to have her at my side during these procedures. She is profoundly
kind and skilled in performing her professional health services…Jenny
is a superb “stick” and has an amazing calm and reassuring
way about her. Even when the Center is bustling with patients, she is
wonderfully able to make each of us feel special, welcomed and that we
are receiving the very best personal care possible…I leave feeling
like I’ve visited with a dear friend and come away with a smile
on my face, feeling happy and healthier. She is a true angel! Jenny Grantham
is a deserving candidate for this award.
Hooker and Grantham also received “A Healer’s Touch”
sculptures, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa, and Grandy’s
Sinnamon® Rolls, donated by owners, and siblings, Paul and Mary Kay Spence.
Created by The DAISY Foundation™—an acronym for Diseases Attacking
the Immune System—the DAISY Award was established by family members
in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Barnes died at the age of 33 in late 1999
from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little
known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Barnes and his family
received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking
nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients
and the patients’ family and friends.
Nurses can be nominated for The DAISY Award online at
sghs.org/daisy-award, or nominations may be placed in DAISY boxes located throughout the Health
System’s Brunswick and Camden campuses. A committee consisting of
Health System team members, including clinical and non-clinical staff,
leadership, medical staff and board members, review the nominations and
determine The DAISY Award recipient(s). Awards are given quarterly throughout the year.
