June 7, 2021 – Southeast Georgia Health System provided the one-dose
Johnson & Johnson
COVID-19 vaccine to seafarers of the MV Miranda, a cargo ship, while it was docked at the
Port of Brunswick on Wednesday, June 2, 2021. Seven seafarers from the
Ukraine and Philippines excitedly lined up to be inoculated to protect
themselves and others against the potentially deadly virus. The Health
System offered vaccinations to the crew of two ships last week, with five
more ships scheduled this week.
“The vaccine provides the best possible protection against COVID-19,” said
Michael D. Scherneck, president and CEO, Southeast Georgia Health System. “Due to their
travel schedule, it can be difficult for the seafarers to get the vaccine
and then be available for the second dose a few weeks later. We have a
small inventory of the single-dose vaccine, and we’re very pleased
to be able to offer it to the seafarers and help protect them during their
travels across the globe.”
Since receiving the vaccine in late December 2020, Southeast Georgia Health
System has provided more than 38,500 COVID-19 vaccines to patients, staff
and the community. The Health System continues to offer the free Pfizer
COVID-19 vaccine at its Brunswick and St. Marys vaccine clinics to everyone
age 12 and older. To schedule an appointment, visit
