June 11, 2021 – The Coastal Georgia “On Par” to Cure
Breast Cancer golf tournament organizers recently donated $18,250 to the
Southeast Georgia Health System
Foundation to support the
Mammograms in Motion program.
Hosted on March 23, 2021, at Sea Palms Resort, this year’s tournament
was a one-day event, unlike previous years’ two-day events with
socials and fund-raising activities. Even so, Carol Sabo, event co-chair,
reported that they had just as many golfers as pre-COVID tournaments.
“After having to cancel last year’s event, we were excited
to get back together again to raise money for these important services,”
said Sabo. “We consider the tournament a big success.”
Thanks to the support of many local businesses, sponsors and participants,
tournament proceeds have helped to provide breast health services in the
community for many years.
“This generous donation is the result of local folks caring about
the needs of others in their community and showing a commitment to our
Health System,” said
Michael D. Scherneck, president and CEO, Southeast Georgia Health System. “Their donation
helps us with the costs of our mobile health vehicle, which serves rural
areas where people may not have access to the health care they really
need.”
Led by the Health System, Mammograms in Motion is a collaboration with
area physicians, community health centers and county health departments
to provide breast health education and outreach, screening mammograms
and diagnostic breast work-up services to uninsured and low income individuals
residing in Brantley, Camden, Glynn and McIntosh counties. While each
of the Health System’s three breast imaging locations participate
in the program, what makes Mammograms in Motion unique is the use of its
Wellness on Wheels (WOW) vehicle. A custom-designed, self-contained mobile
health vehicle, the WOW travels to rural communities to provide screening
mammograms and other outreach services to patients who have limited access to care.
