December 10, 2020 – Southeast Georgia Health System is pleased to
welcome board-certified family medicine physician
Jelisa Carroll, D.O., to
Southeast Georgia Physician Associates-Primary Care. Carroll completed undergraduate work at Kennesaw State University in
Kennesaw, Georgia, and earned her medical degree at the Philadelphia College
of Osteopathic Medicine in Suwannee, Georgia. Her family medicine residency
took place at Wellspan Good Samaritan Hospital in Lebanon, Pennsylvania.
Carroll’s drive to become a doctor stemmed from her innate compassion
and curiosity. “I decided to pursue a career in the health care
field to help others,” says Carroll. “Plus, becoming a doctor
satisfied my interest in human anatomy along with my love of science.”
Having grown up in rural McIntosh County, Carroll’s path to becoming
a doctor wasn’t always easy or clearly defined. “Where I’m
from, you don’t see many physicians who look like me, and growing
up, my teachers and advisors encouraged me to become a basketball coach
or to find a different career path altogether. But I continued to fight
for what I wanted, which landed me here.”
Carroll follows a patient-centered care model, which she defines as caring
for patients and families in ways they find valuable and helpful. She
listens to, informs, and directly involves patients in their care. “I
stand true to this approach and hope my patients feel that I put them
at the center of their own care,” she says.
According to Carroll, the best moment of any work day happens when she
has improved a patient’s quality of life. “Patient interaction
is what I enjoy most. Every human being is so unique. I see patients at
their happiest and at their most vulnerable. Hearing a patient say, ‘Doc,
I feel so much better,’ be it physically, emotionally or spiritually,
is what brings me the greatest satisfaction.”
Carroll sees patients of all ages and for all reasons. Whether a newborn
is due for a wellness exam, a child or teenager needs a sports physical,
a middle-age mom is diagnosed with diabetes or a grandfather is seeking
help for heart disease, Carroll is prepared to help. Her special interest
in women’s and adolescent health makes her especially accessible
to those patients.
“I was the medical student who did not fall in love with one particular
specialty. Family medicine was the perfect match for me,” Carroll explains.
By joining Primary Care, Carroll has truly come full circle. “I chose
Southeast Georgia Health System because it literally is home for me. I
was born at the Health System. I saw the health care challenges in our
community and knew I wanted to return to serve the needs of our community.
I’m here to treat my patients and help them live healthier, happier
lives. We are in this together!”
When she is not practicing medicine, Carroll joins her husband in keeping
up with their toddler daughter, Sydni, and baby son, Cree. “Life
is moving really fast for us right now, but we enjoy every minute of it.”
A self-described sports fan, Carroll enjoys watching basketball and football
and playing sports when time allows.
Carroll joins a 10-member team of providers at
Southeast Georgia Physician Associates-Primary Care on the Southeast Georgia Health System
Camden Campus. She is currently accepting new patients. To learn more, visit
