March 25, 2019 – For the fourth consecutive year, Southeast Georgia
Health System has contributed $2,500 to Coastal Georgia Honor Flight (CGHF)
in support of its mission to honor local military veterans for their service.
Michael D. Scherneck, president and CEO, presented the donation on February 28, 2019, to CGHF
board members Dave Olender, president, and Mark Beaudry, vice-president
and co-flight leader.
In addition to the annual $2,500 contribution, the Health System also hosts
a luncheon for the CGHF veterans and their guardians and provides conference
room space for their orientation meeting.
Honor Flight is an organization that takes World War II, Korean and Vietnam
War veterans to see their war and service memorials and the Arlington
Cemetery in Washington, D.C., at no charge. Since 2014, the Coastal Georgia
chapter has flown more than 340 veterans via private chartered airline
from Brunswick to Washington D.C. for a day of celebration, reflection
and recognition. The veterans fly free, courtesy of sponsorships and donations.
The 2019 flight is scheduled for May 4, 2019, and donations are still
being accepted.
There are currently 140 Honor Flight chapters in 46 states; a 2017 report
indicates that since the 2005 Honor Flight founding, more than 200,000
veterans and 143,000 guardians have participated.
