December 17, 2019 – Southeast Georgia Health System recently recognized
bariatric surgery patients’ weight loss and health victories during
its second annual Evening of Empowerment, a celebration attended by patients
who've had bariatric surgery, their guests, and the
Bariatric Program team.
“Obesity can hold people back from living the life they want, but
we’re here to help change that,” stated
J. William Tsai, M.D., FACS, as he welcomed the attendees. A board-certified general surgeon with
Southeast Georgia Physician Associates-General & Vascular Surgery, Tsai specializes in
bariatric surgery using laparoscopic techniques. “It’s important to remember
that success is not always about how much weight has been lost. Small
victories like being able to comfortably cross your legs or walk up stairs
without losing your breath are just as important. That’s in addition
to major health improvements such as eliminating diabetes or blood pressure
medications. Tonight’s event recognizes our patients’ commitment
and hard work, and reminds them how far they’ve come since their
decision to have surgery.”
The
Bariatric Program had plenty to celebrate, including the addition of
da Vinci robotic surgery, expanding the program to the Health System’s
Camden Campus, and patients losing more than 8,100 pounds since last year’s event
and overall improving their quality of life.
