August 26, 2019 – Southeast Georgia Health System is pleased to welcome
board-certified family medicine and sports medicine physician
Lindsey E. Sweat, M.D., to
Southeast Georgia Physician Associates-Camden Primary Care and the
Camden Campus medical staff.
Sweat earned her medical degree at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta
University/University of Georgia Medical Partnership in Athens, and completed
her residency and fellowship at AnMed Family Medicine in Anderson, South
Carolina. She was attracted to a career in health care from an early age
because of the positive impact medicine had on her family.
“When my cousin and I were five years old, she was diagnosed with
leukemia,” says Sweat. “Her prognosis was uncertain, but thanks
to the treatment and care of her physicians, she’s now married with
three children! That was my first exposure to medicine. From then, I knew
I wanted to help people live a healthy life like my cousin’s physicians
helped her.”
Sweat chose family medicine as her specialty because of the opportunity
to develop close, meaningful relationships with her patients. “In
medical school, I enjoyed every rotation, from surgery and internal medicine
to women’s health. Family medicine allows me to incorporate a little
piece of every rotation into my everyday life. I can take care of patients
from birth through adulthood, following their progress in life and health.
The personal relationships developed through seeing patients regularly
are one of the most rewarding aspects of family medicine and primary care.”
She adds, “I like to treat the patient as a whole. Health is not
only a physical state; mental and social aspects must be addressed as
well. My goal is to know my patient’s family and all the aspects
of their life that may impact their health. Being in a small town allows
me to know patients on a more personal level and provide a better, more
comprehensive level of treatment.”
Prior to joining the Health System medical staff, Sweat completed a Primary
Care Sports Medicine Fellowship. As a fellow, she worked with athletes
from multiple universities, including Clemson University’s football
team during their 2017 National Championship season. As one of the primary
team physicians, she provided sideline coverage for football games and
took care of athletes in the training room.
“I’m proud of my experience with the Clemson football team
and excited to apply the new, cutting edge practices in sports medicine
that I learned while with the National Championship team to local athletes
here in St. Marys.”
Following graduation, Sweat chose to relocate to St. Marys because of close
family ties and friendships. “My husband is from Waycross and attended
high school with Dr. Christopher Yonz, an othopaedic surgeon at Summit
Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Surgery. After hearing how much he and
his wife Natalie, a physician assistant at Camden Primary Care, loved
St. Marys and the Health System, my husband and I had to check it out.
The people here are so nice and willing to offer a helping hand. From
the first interview, I knew it was a place we could make our home.”
When not working, Sweat enjoys spending time with friends and family, travelling,
paddle boarding and kayaking. She’s also a huge UGA fan and loves
attending their football games.
Southeast Georgia Physician Associates-Camden Primary Care, a strategic affiliate of Southeast Georgia Health System, is located
in St. Marys. Sweat provides expert primary care and non-operative orthopaedic
and sports medicine services to adults and children of all ages. Her sports
medicine services include typical joint injections in the knees and shoulders
for achy joints and arthritis and advanced joint injections using an ultrasound
machine to target deep joints (hips, pelvis/sacroiliac joint and true
shoulder joint) as well as small joints (acromioclavicular, fingers, wrist,
toes and feet). Additionally, Sweat is looking forward to incorporating
the innovative field of orthobiologics, the process of using one’s
own tissue (blood and/or stem cells from fat) to treat arthritis and other
injuries, to her impressive repertoire of services.
