August 17, 2018 – Southeast Georgia Health System is pleased to welcome
board-certified neurologist
Nakia Wilson, M.D., with
Southeast Georgia Physician Associates-Neurology, to the Brunswick Campus medical staff.
Wilson earned her medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine,
Washington, D.C., and completed her residency at the Medical University
of South Carolina in Charleston, and her fellowship training at the University
of Florida in Gainesville. Prior to joining the Health System, Wilson
published an article in the Journal of Stroke Cerebrovascular Disease
and is currently writing a research paper on AIDP (acute inflammatory
demyelinating polyneuropathy).
“When I began my career in medicine, I was torn between several very
different specialties: trauma surgery, forensic pathology and neurology.
I prayed and listened to family advice regarding the right path for me,”
Wilson says. “Looking back now, I can’t imagine not being
a neurologist. Treating people with epilepsy and improving their quality
of life brings me the most joy in what I do.”
When Wilson isn’t practicing medicine, she enjoys the beach, playing
with her two cats, practicing the saxophone and primitive backpacking,
so remaining in a climate where she can enjoy the outdoors was a “must
have” while considering the next steps in her career. She decided
to set roots in Brunswick because of the Health System’s experienced
providers and the community’s small-town feel.
“After meeting the Health System’s team of neurologists, I
knew that this community was in very capable hands. I’m eager to
work alongside and learn from them,” says Wilson. “I realized
a long time ago that I prefer towns over cities because I like the idea
of really getting to know my patients, not just their complaints, and
who they are outside of the office. Treating patients like family and
sometimes placing myself in their shoes is important to me. Patient care
isn’t a dictatorship. I work together with my patients, empower
them with knowledge of treatment options, and help them understand and
develop realistic, long-term goals.”
Wilson provides expert care for a variety of neurological conditions, including
epilepsy, stroke, dementia, neuromuscular disorders, movement disorders,
sleep disorders, neuroimmunology, and more. She joins Enrique Fernandez,
M.D., board-certified neurologist, at Southeast Georgia Physician Associates-Neurology,
a strategic affiliate of the Health System, located at 2500 Starling Street,
Ste. 503, in Brunswick. Visit sghs.org/neurosciences or call 912-466-5503
