July 26, 2017— Arthritis is the nation’s most common cause
of disability. It limits the activities of 21 million Americans, but thanks
to advancements in robotic surgery techniques, people suffering from arthritis
can consider a knee replacement without the extended downtime or increased
risk of traditional surgery. Denny A. Carter, M.D., and Beau Sasser, M.D.,
board-certified
orthopaedic
surgeons at Summit Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Surgery, a strategic
affiliate of Southeast Georgia Health System, discuss Mako™ Robotic-Arm
Assisted Technology, in part one of two Health Chat Webinars about innovative
robotic surgeries to treat arthritis.
“There are different kinds of arthritis and different ways to treat
it,” says Carter, “but if
conservative
treatment such as oral medications and injections don’t work, joint
replacement may be indicated.”
Carter was born and raised in Georgia. He was a national merit scholar
and earned a full academic scholarship to Mississippi State University,
graduating summa cum laude in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He then
attended the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta and completed
orthopaedic
surgery residency training at Louisiana State University Health Sciences
Center where he gained valuable experience in
orthopaedic
trauma surgery at the famous Charity Hospital in New Orleans. Carter joined
Summit Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Surgery in 2003.
Sasser is a native of Glynn County. He earned his undergraduate degree
from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., and his medical degree from
the Medical College of Georgia where he also completed both his internship and
orthopaedic
residency. Following his residency, Sasser received exclusive sports medicine
training while in a fellowship program with the Kansas City Orthopaedic
Institute. During this time, he worked with the NFL’s Kansas City
Chiefs, treating a variety of sports and
orthopaedic
injuries incurred by these elite athletes.
