Jan. 31, 2017— The mortality rate in the United States for patients
over 50 due to an
osteoporosis related
hip fracture is 25 percent. One out of two women and one out of four men
will sustain a fracture due to osteoporosis during their lifetime, but
you don’t have to be that one. The newest Health Chat Webinar, presented by
J. Melvin Deese, M.D.,
board-certified
orthopaedic
surgeon at Summit Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Surgery, and medical
director of the Southeast Georgia Health System Orthopaedic & Spine
Center, will feature “Osteoporosis and Fracture Prevention.”
“Most people don’t even know they have osteoporosis until they
break a bone,” says Deese. “We are working to educate the
community about this silent disease and how to prevent fractures.”
Deese is a native of Columbus, Ga., and graduate of the University of Georgia.
He received his
orthopaedic
residency training at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans,
La. Throughout his medical school and
orthopaedic
residency, Deese worked and trained with some of the most notable sports
medicine specialists in the world. He is a charter member of the American
Sports Medicine Fellowship Society where he served on the Board of Directors,
and he is a member of the Hughston Sports Medicine Society.
