On February 26, 2016, sisters Linda Starratt and Brenda Walker presented
a handmade coastal scene quilt to Krista Robitz, director, Development,
Southeast Georgia Health System Foundation, and Bryan Thompson, development
coordinator, Nunnally House, in appreciation for the care that Walker
received during her stay at Nunnally House.
A breast cancer survivor, Walker endured 38 radiation treatments over two
and a half months following surgery and chemotherapy. During radiation
treatments, she spent Monday through Friday at Nunnally House, returning
home to Hortense, Ga. for the weekends. “Nunnally House is amazing,
says Walker. “It’s a beautiful, gorgeous place. Every time
I returned, it felt like coming home.”
Inspired by family vacations to Cumberland Island and Starratt’s
18 years of working at the Greyfield Inn on Cumberland Island, the quilt
captures a stylized version of Starratt’s favorite beach path. Though
Starratt was the quilter, the sisters collaborated on the quilt’s
design through photos and phone calls while Walker was undergoing treatment.
“We present this quilt to the Nunnally House with much love and appreciation
to all involved,” said Starratt. The handwritten tag on the back
of the quilt echoes her sentiment: “Made especially for Nunnally
House in appreciation for the care given to Brenda C. Walker. Designed
and quilted by Linda J. Starratt, St. Marys, Ga., December 2015.”
“This beautiful quilt captures a scene that many
associate
with peace, healing
and
happiness,” said Thompson. “We will proudly hang it on the
wall at Nunnally House for all to enjoy.”
The Nunnally House is a 40-room residential facility located adjacent to
the Brunswick Campus. It offers home-like lodging to family members of
critically ill patients and cancer patients who live outside of Glynn
County. There are also rooms for on-call medical staff and medical students.
Each room is comfortably furnished and a communal lobby offers welcoming
sitting areas with a fireplace and tables for games. The residential grounds
are landscaped with a bricked patio, walkways and benches beneath Live
Oak trees.
