As the Southeast Georgia Health System 2014 Bridge Run approaches, Nicole
Goebel, a Camden County resident, continues to recruit her co-workers
at the City of St. Marys to join her for the event, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 15.
Goebel has both walked and ran the event several times in the past, but
this is the first year she has recruited co-workers to tackle the 7,780-foot-long
SidneyLanierBridgein Brunswick with her. At its center, the bridge measures
480 feet high above making it the tallest span in the state. “The
bridge can seem pretty daunting, so I have been trying to help people
get over their fears about it,” she said. The Camden Bridge Walkers
team consists of co-workers and a few family members and friends.
Goebel said she first became interested in the Bridge Run, which benefits
the Health System’s cancer care
programs,
because it is a “unique local event that benefits a great cause.”
The Bridge Run has grown tremendously in recent years as word of the event
has spread through the running community. “It’s amazing to
see how much it has grown since the first year I did it. There’s
so much energy and everyone is out there encouraging each other. Whatever
the reason, whether it is for fitness or to benefit the cause, it is just
a great event.”
The run is considered challenging and should not be attempted by those
not properly trained
However
, there will be plenty of other activities for the entire family, including
the 5K Walk, live entertainment, and a Vendors and Runners Expo.
“We are very excited about the number of groups who have gathered
together to form teams this year,” said Krista Robitz, director,
Development, Southeast Georgia Health System Foundation. “Numerous
schools, businesses and even civic and community groups are registering.
The Bridge is great fun for all and has been proven to be a very successful
way to raise funds for the Health System's cancer care programs. It
is not too late for others to create a team and register today!”
The registration fee for both the run and the walk is $40 per person.
There is a $2 discount per person for teams of 10 or more. Those competing
in the 5K run must register by Feb. 12, through
www.sghs.org or
