Eighteen students from area high schools were introduced to the field of
Sports Medicine at the inaugural Southeast Georgia Health System Student
Athletic Trainer Camp held July 16-18, 2012, at the Health System’s
Brunswick Campus.
Students met with Health System athletic trainers,
orthopaedic
surgeons, and physical and occupational therapists to learn about their
specific roles within the field of Sports Medicine. Students also learned
many basic skills of athletic training such as preventing heat illness,
ankle taping, and injury prevention. A Friends and Family CPR course and
ImPACT® concussion testing were also provided during the camp. Special
guest speakers included Melvin Deese, M.D. and Beau Sasser, M.D.,
orthopaedic
surgeons with Summit Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Surgery.
Taping Ankle --Students participating in the inaugural Southeast Georgia
Health System Student Athletic Trainer Camp had a chance to experience
the basics of taping and injury evaluation during a
three day
experience at the Health System.
ImPACT testing -- Students participating in the inaugural Southeast Georgia
Health System Student Athletic Trainer Camp had the opportunity to experience
ImPACT® concussion testing, the same concussion testing program used
for NFL athletes.
