BRUNSWICK, Georgia – Southeast Georgia Health System is pleased to
welcome certified athletic trainers Kathryn “Kate” Rachel
Abdelnour and Lewis “Chip” McCarty Jr. Abdelnour is the new
athletic trainer at Frederica Academy, and McCarty is now serving as the
athletic trainer at McIntosh County Academy. Certified athletic trainer
Becky Knor, who was previously the Health System’s athletic trainer
at McIntosh Academy, is now providing athletic training services at the
College of Coastal Georgia to support the growth of their collegiate athletic programs.
Abdelnour earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education (athletic
training track) from the University of South Carolina (USC) in Columbia,
S.C., where she gained experience working as a student athletic trainer
with area high schools and the USC football and track teams. Her previous
experience includes working for the Institute for Western Surgery in Guangzhou,
China. Most recently, she was an athletic trainer with the USC Sports
Medicine Center. She is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’
Association and in addition to her athletic trainer certification, she
holds a certification as an American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Professional
Rescuer. As a volunteer, she has helped perform sports medical physicals,
served as a first responder at sporting events and assisted the head athletic
trainer with the Heathwood Hall Episcopal School’s (Columbia, S.C.)
varsity football team for six years.
McCarty earned his certification as an emergency medical technician from
Clayton College and State University, in Morrow, Ga. He then went on to
Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Ga., to earn both a bachelor’s
and master’s degree in health and physical education (emphasis in
sports medicine). Additionally, McCarty completed a student athletic trainer
internship with the Indianapolis Colts. His years of professional experience
includes working as an EMT and firefighter, as well as working as an athletic
trainer and teacher in schools throughout the state of Georgia. Additionally,
he has worked as an athletic trainer for Perry Hospital in Perry, Ga.,
Spalding Regional Medical Center in Griffin, Georgia and Greenville Hospital
System University Medical Center in Greenville, S.C. McCarty served as
the director of sports medicine for six years at Memorial Hospital and
Manor in Bainbridge, Ga. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers
Association and the Georgia Athletic Trainers Association. In addition
to his certification as an athletic trainer, he holds certifications as
an EMT and, orthopaedic technician. McCarty has served as the head athletic
trainer for the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association South Football Team’s
All-Star Game in 2001 and for three years served as an athletic trainer
and EMT at the Universal Cheerleading Association’s National Championships
at Disney World.
Knor completed her bachelor’s degree in rehabilitation science-athletic
training, from the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Penn., before
going on to earn her master’s of science degree in athletic training
from the California University of Pennsylvania in California, Penn. As
an undergraduate, Knor served as a student athletic trainer with the University
of Pittsburgh football, men’s basketball and soccer, men’s
and women’s swimming and diving and gymnastics teams. Before joining
the Health System in 2006, Becky participated in a graduate assistantship
at Washington and Jefferson College, Washington, Penn. while completing
her master’s thesis research on erogenic supplement use and NCAA
Athletes. Knor is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association
and the Southeastern Athletic Trainers’ Association. In addition
to her athletic trainer certification, she is certified by the National
Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) as a performance enhancement specialist.
For more than 15 years, the Health System has provided certified athletic
trainers to area schools at no cost to them. In addition to Frederica
Academy, McIntosh County Academy and the College of Coastal Georgia, the
Health System provides these services to Brunswick High School and Glynn
Academy under the direction of board-certified orthopaedic surgeon Beau
Sasser, M.D., medical director, Sports Medicine, Southeast Georgia Health System.
