BRUNSWICK, Georgia – Coastal Medical Access Project (CMAP) announced
today that they will become part of Southeast Georgia Health System. CMAP,
which was founded in 2002, provides health care for uninsured and underinsured
adults in Camden, Glynn and McIntosh counties. Cooperative Healthcare
Services, Inc., a strategic affiliate of the Health System will assume
operating all of CMAP’s facilities.
According to Brian Parks, chairman of the CMAP Board, the current economic
climate has led to decreased donations to CMAP which resulted in the organization
not being able to accept new patients. The integration of CMAP into the
Health System will provide uninsured and underinsured residents in our
communities the security of health care services, including dental and vision.
“The Health System has been a major supporter of CMAP since its inception
by providing funding of more than $1,840,000 to date, as well as a building,
equipment, and furnishings. They also currently provide CMAP with the
services of a family nurse practitioner. Financial assistance through
the Health System provides clinical testing, radiology services and surgery
for our patients at a fraction of the cost or in some cases at no cost,”
Parks says. “CMAP becoming a part of the Health System family will
give clients greater access to health care resources and allow for expanded
services hours to better meet the high demand for care.”
“The Health System has always provided health care services for all
people, regardless of their ability to pay—we provided $35,600,000
million in charity care and $42,100,000 in bad debt in fiscal year 2011
alone,” says Gary R. Colberg, FACHE, president and CEO of Southeast
Georgia Health System. “Welcoming CMAP to the Health System family
fits perfectly with our mission, vision and values, and enables us to
improve access to health care for everyone in our community. CMAP has
done a wonderful job of meeting this ever-growing need and has been essential
to improving the quality of life for those who find themselves without
insurance. Their services have helped to alleviate overcrowding in our
Emergency Care Centers and local physician’s offices. We look forward
to continuing the CMAP mission and to further expand our quality health
care, close to home.”
