BRUNSWICK, Georgia: May 31, 2011 – The Coastal Georgia Affiliate
of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has awarded a $40,000 grant to Southeast
Georgia Health System for the “Mammograms in Motion” project.
This community project is being led by the Health System to provide breast
health education and outreach, mammograms and diagnostic breast work-up
services to uninsured and medically underserved individuals residing in
Camden, Glynn, Long and McIntosh counties.
“We are thrilled to have been selected as a recipient of this grant
from the Coastal Georgia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure,”
says DelRia Baisden, vice president, Southeast Georgia Health System.
“Our program will place special emphasis on reaching out to individuals
in rural areas who have limited access to health care and health education
by using our Wellness On Wheels (WOW). The WOW is a mobile health vehicle
outfitted with screening mammography, screening bone density, blood pressure
and blood glucose testing capability, which was purchased primarily with
funds donated from the Health System Foundation. Additionally, the project
will provide a community outreach program in the targeted counties through
health fairs and educational forums. The grant will also enable us to
purchase educational material that will emphasize the importance of breast
health.”
Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest breast cancer
organization, and the Coastal Georgia Affiliate is one of 125 Affiliates
on the front lines dedicated to ending breast cancer in their communities.
Komen Affiliates fund innovative programs that help women and men overcome
the cultural, social, educational and financial barriers to breast cancer
screening and treatment.
“At the Komen Coastal Georgia Affiliate, we conducted a needs assessment
of our area communities which highlighted the need for mammograms and
breast health education for persons living in rural Camden, Glynn, Long
and McIntosh with limited resources and access to health care,”
says Beth Desloges, outreach coordinator for the Affiliate. “We
are confident that through the ‘Mammograms in Motion’ program
these needs will be met.”
