BRUNSWICK, Georgia: July 22, 2011– Cancer survivor Barbara Waller
of Brunswick says during a recent trip to see one of her doctors at the
Southeast Georgia Health System Outpatient Care Center, she noticed several
cancer patients coming in to receive treatments in the Health System’s
Cancer Care Center. She said a light bulb suddenly went off in her head
and she realized what she could do with the many colorful Afghans that
she crotchets. “I remember how cold chemotherapy patients get when
they are being treated and I wanted to make them feel comfortable,”
says Waller, who received all of her cancer treatments at the Health System
eight years ago. So, Waller called the Health System’s Cancer Care
Center with her donation offer and on July 12, she brought two dozen of
the Afghans to the Center. “I’ve crocheted since I was 8-years-old,”
says Waller, who is now 76. “I enjoy making Afghans and really enjoy
giving them to people who need and appreciate them. And if they need more,
I’ll be happy to make as many as they need.”
Michelle Morris, assistant vice president, responsible for the Cancer Care
Center, says the patients and her care team are grateful for Waller’s
generosity. “We were all touched by Mrs. Waller’s thoughtfulness
and concern for our patients,” Morris says. “Thanks to her
and other generous donors, we are able to provide those added personal
touches that make our patients more comfortable while they are undergoing
their treatments. We are truly fortunate to live in such a caring community.”
