BRUNSWICK, Georgia: Dec. 13, 2011– An important component in controlling
diabetes is proper self-care. Fortunately, residents of southeast Georgia
who have diabetes have the access to the Southeast Georgia Health System
Outpatient Diabetes Education Program. The program was recently re-awarded
the prestigious American Diabetes Association (ADA) Education Recognition
Certificate for a quality diabetes self-management education program—the
only program in Georgia south of Macon to receive such a distinction.
According to the ADA, the Health System’s program offers high-quality
education that is an essential component of effective diabetes treatment.
Although diabetes is a very serious disease, it can be kept in check with
diet, exercise, and, medication, says Evelyn Tatum, R.N., certified diabetes
educator at the Health System. The Health System’s diabetes education
program helps patients and their families learn how to cope with this
serious disease and stay as healthy as possible. “Our program had
to meet very stringent standards to receive the ADA certification,”
she says. “I love helping people realize that they can and should
be in control of the disease of diabetes, not that diabetes has control
over them. Many times it is simply a different way of looking at the amounts
of foods eaten.”
