BRUNSWICK, Georgia: Nov. 16, 2010 – Patients at the Southeast Georgia
Health System Cancer Care Center now have soft, comfortable hats to protect
them again the cooler temperatures thanks to the Knitters of Nativity
of Our Lady Church in Darien.
According to a member of the group, Nancy Lawless, the group meets each
Wednesday morning to visit and knit. “We knit for different causes,”
she says. “We’ve knitted sweaters for Indian children in the
Dakotas and for other causes, such as a local outreach program for the
needy, on an as needed basis. When I went to the Health System (Brunswick
Campus) to have my routine mammogram, I noticed the sign for the Cancer
Care Center. That’s when we decided to knit caps for the patients,
and it was a really great experience.”
The small group, which in addition to Lawless includes Ruby Moore, Daneen
Brinkman, Paula Collado, Sue Angle, Madge Gilmore, Anna Marie Morris and
Pat Inacio, spent the summer months knitting 44 hats. The knitters then
attached a note to each hat sending their blessings to the patients and
presented them to Cancer Care Center team members.
“We are so grateful to these wonderful ladies,” says Health
System Assistant Vice President Michelle Morris. “Their generous
gift has already brought smiles to the faces of our patients and has made
them feel like our community truly cares about them.”
