BRUNSWICK, Georgia: May 5, 2010 – Southeast Georgia Health System
is pleased to announce that Michele Gornto, R.N., has been named the Health
System’s Nurse of the Year 2010. Gornto, a Resource Management Nurse
at the Health System’s Brunswick Campus, was selected from a group
of 17 nurses from throughout the Health System who were nominated by fellow
team members for their outstanding service. The announcement was made
during a reception held Wednesday, May 5, as part of National Nurses Week
festivities. Each year the Health System joins the American Nurses Association
(ANA) in recognition of the commitment nurses make every day to patients
and the community. This year with the theme was "Nurses: Caring Today
for a Healthier Tomorrow." Gornto joined the Health System in 2008.
She was nominated and subsequently chosen to receive the award for her
outstanding leadership and enthusiasm in providing her patients with compassionate
care and treating fellow team members with respect, says Elizabeth J.
Gunn, MSN, vice president, Patient Care Services.
“The purpose of this award is to highlight the selfless contributions
of individuals who are part of the nursing profession and to say thank
you to all our nursing colleagues,” Gunn says. “All of our
nominees are outstanding and Michele is an excellent choice for this award.
She has proven herself to be dedicated to giving our patients the best
care available and has gained the admiration and respect of team members,
patients and their families. Even when under stress, she handles her duties
with grace and professionalism and is an outstanding example of what a
nurse should be. We are proud to have nurses like Michele and her fellow
nominees on our Health System team. ”

System nurses were honored throughout the week with candy-grams, coupons,
