BRUNSWICK, Georgia: Sept. 8, 2009 – Osteoporosis is a disease in
which the bones become weak and are more likely to break. In the United
States alone, 10 million people have osteoporosis, and millions more have
low bone mass (called osteopenia), placing them at risk for osteoporosis
and broken bones. One out of every two women and one in four men over
age 50 will break a bone during their lifetime due to osteoporosis.
To learn more about this prevalent condition, Southeast Georgia Health
System is presenting the seminar, “Osteoporosis.” This presentation,
part of the Health System’s ongoing series of free community lectures,
is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 10, at 6 p.m. in the Linda S. Pinson
Conference Center on the Brunswick Campus, 2415 Parkwood Drive, Brunswick.
The speaker for this event is orthopaedic surgeon J. Kevin Brooks, MD.
Brooks is a native of Georgia and is a member of the medical staff of
Southeast Georgia Health System and Southern Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine
in Brunswick.

in 1990. He went on to graduate with honors with a Bachelor of Science
degree from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, where he was a Ty Cobb
Scholar, Troutman Weir Scholar Athlete of the Year, and an officer of
Sigma Nu Fraternity.
He obtained his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia (MCG)
and earned the Outstanding Surgery Research Award and election into the
Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Brooks completed his orthopaedic
surgery residency at MCG in 2003 and served as an assistant professor
of orthopaedic surgery there for two years before joining the staff of
Southern Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. Brooks has earned Fellowship
