BRUNSWICK, Georgia: Feb. 19, 2008 – According to the American Heart
Association, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one cause of death
in the United States. However, adopting a healthier lifestyle can help
you reduce your risk for heart attack or other cardiovascular event. To
learn ways to lessen your chances of developing CVD or having another
cardiac event, the public is invited to attend the free lecture, “Maintaining
a Healthy, Happy Heart.” This presentation, part of the Southeast
Georgia Health System’s ongoing series of free community lectures,
will be held on Thursday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m., in the Linda S. Pinson Conference
Center on the Brunswick Campus, 2415 Parkwood Drive.
The speaker for this event is Michael H. Butler, MD, board certified interventional
cardiologist. Butler is a graduate of the University of Michigan and completed
his medical degree at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit,
Michigan. He completed his residency at Emory University in Atlanta, and
a fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Butler is the chief of
the Cardiology Department at the Brunswick Campus and is also the primary
investigator for the Health System’s participations in the Atlantic
C-PORT, the Cardiovascular-Patient Outcomes Research Team clinical trial.
The Brunswick Campus is one of only 10 hospitals in Georgia participating
in this program. The trial is led by Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions
to determine if cardiac stents and angioplasty procedures performed at
hospitals without open-heart surgery services have comparable outcomes
to procedures performed at hospitals with open-heart surgery services.
During the lecture, Butler will discuss ways to keep your heart healthy,
and for persons who have had one or more cardiac events, he will offer
advice on avoiding further problems. Butler will also answer questions
from the audience and light refreshments will be served.
