BRUNSWICK, Georgia: May 27, 2009 – Although the Southeast Georgia
Health System Volunteen program at the Brunswick campus is open year-round,
summer is a special time for the program, says Kristin Doll, director
of Volunteer Services.
“During the summer we have a special eight-week program that allows
teenagers to volunteer more hours than during the school year and in more
departments,” Doll says. “Volunteering at the hospital or
our Senior Care Center is a great way to help others, meet friends, and
explore possible careers in health care. This kind of experience also
looks great on college and scholarship applications.”
Summer volunteens volunteer for one or two, four-hour shifts per week.
Volunteering opportunities are available in such areas as the Miriam &
Hugh Nunnally Maternity Care Center, Pediatrics, Human Resources, Imaging/Radiology,
Outpatient Surgery, Senior Care Center and more.
To qualify for the program, teens must be full-time students in grades
9-12, be 14 to 18-years-old and have a B or higher grade point average.
They must also maintain high standards of contact and commit to volunteer
a total of 64 hours during the eight-week summer session or a three to
four hour shift each week if volunteering during the school year. Volunteens
are also required to attend an orientation session where they must obtain
a tuberculosis skin test—provided at no cost—and learn about
the Health System’s safety standards and procedures. The summer
program’s orientation is scheduled for Wednesday, June 10, from
9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Brunswick Campus, 2415 Parkwood Drive, Brunswick.
According to Doll, the deadline to apply for the summer program is June
1 and space is limited, so teens who are interested should complete an
application as soon as possible. Applications for the program are available
at guidance counselor’s offices at all Glynn County High Schools
or at www.sghs.org. For more information, contact Doll at 576-6405 or
