BRUNSWICK, Georgia: Nov. 30, 2009 – Area babysitters and would-be
babysitters between the ages of 11 and 15 years now have the opportunity
to learn what they need to know and what parents want in a responsible
babysitter. The American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training class is
being offered by Southeast Georgia Health System on Saturday, Dec. 19,
from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in Classroom 1 on the first floor of the Camden Campus,
2000 Dan Proctor Drive, St. Marys.
This fast-paced, fun course includes hands-on activities, an exciting video,
role-playing, and lively discussions. Participants will gain the confidence
to make smart decisions and stay safe in any babysitting situation.
Those who take the course will learn how to:
- Supervise children and infants
- Perform basic child-care skills, such as diapering and feeding
- Choose safe, age-appropriate games and toys
- Handle bedtime and discipline issues
- Indentify safety hazards and prevent injuries
- Care for common injuries and emergencies such as choking, burns, cuts,
and bee stings
- Communicate effectively with parents
- Find and interview for babysitting jobs
“As a Red Cross-trained babysitter, you have an awesome opportunity
to help your family and neighbors…and pick up some valuable skills,
too!” says actress/singer Raven-Symoné, an American Red Cross
celebrity cabinet member.
In addition to the hands-on training, participants will receive excellent
resource materials, including a babysitter’s training handbook,
a babysitter’s emergency reference guide, and a babysitter’s
training CD-ROM, that includes tools for operating a babysitting business,
a babysitting organizer, and a printable activity booklet with games,
crafts, songs, recipes, a resume template and more. The cost is $25 and
registration is required by Dec. 14. Class size is limited to 10 and participants
are asked to bring their own lunches. Those completing the course will
receive an official American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training Certificate.
