BRUNSWICK, Georgia: Aug. 11, 2009 – Hyperlipidemia is an elevation
of lipids or fats in the bloodstream, which can cause hardening of the
arteries. To provide education on the danger of hyperlipidemia and what
can be done to combat this serious condition, Southeast Georgia Health
System is hosting a lecture titled “Hyperlipidemia: High Cholesterol
and Triglyceride Levels Speed Up Hardening of the Arteries.”
This presentation, part of the Health System’s ongoing series of
free community lectures, is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 20, at 6 p.m.
in the Cafeteria Conference Room on the Camden Campus, 2000 Dan Proctor
Drive, St. Marys.
The speaker for this event is internal medicine specialist Thomas C. Whitesell,
MD. Whitesell is a graduate of the Mercer University School of Medicine.
He completed his residency at the University of Alabama where he finished
at the top of his class, and he is now in practice at Southeast Georgia
Physician Associates-Internal Medicine, a strategic affiliate of the Health System.
“We have to have fat for our bodies to function, but when the levels
are too high, it increases the risk for heart disease and stroke,”
Whitehead says. “I will discuss how hyperlipidemia is diagnosed,
how you can avoid it, and what treatment options are available if you
have it.”
Following his lecture, Whitesell will answer questions from the audience
and light refreshments will be served.
The next community lecture scheduled at the Camden Campus is “Back-to-School
Boot Camp: Information on Immunizations, ADHD, Nutrition and Sleep,”
on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. in the Cafeteria Conference Room.
