Darrell E. Schwertner, M.D., is a board-certified internal medicine physician
and gastroenterologist at
Southeast Georgia Physician Associates-Gastroenterology. He has treated patients in Glynn and surrounding counties for 25 years
and specializes in a variety of abdominal conditions, including reflux
disease, peptic ulcer disease, abdominal pain, irritable bowel disease,
inflammatory bowel disease and diverticulitis. His areas of special interest
are colon cancer prevention and colon cancer screening.
Prior to joining the Health System, Dr. Schwertner obtained a Bachelor
of Science in chemistry at the University of South Alabama. He graduated
Cum Laude from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham,
joined the Air Force and completed his internal medicine residency at
Keesler Air Force Base, the second largest Air Force hospital in the world.
He finished his gastroenterology training at the University of South Florida.
Dr. Schwertner was Chief of Gastroenterology at Keesler Air Force Base
for three years, and after his military service, moved to Brunswick in 1994.
Over the course of his medical career, Dr. Schwertner has performed over
20,000 colonoscopies. Combining his love of travel and his desire to help
others, he has participated in over 10 medical missions to Nicaragua over
the past 15 years. Dr. Schwertner was raised in a military family, and
as such, has lived all over the United States as well as in Spain and Libya.
Dr. Schwertner, along with all of our Gastroenterology physicians, is a
dedicated proceduralist who focuses on addressing patient concerns with
compassion and sensitivity.
