From Carpenter to Caregiver
Healthy Partners, Winter 2022
Good carpenters care about their craft. The job requires focus, flexibility
and attention to detail. The same is true of nursing. The skills that
Brian Thomas, R.N., brought to construction sites for 30 years he now
brings to patients at Southeast Georgia Health System. Mr. Thomas’
path to becoming a nurse was circuitous. “My son was working as
a hospital aide,” he says. “I spent an hour trying to encourage
him to go to nursing school. We reviewed the pros and cons. I didn’t
convince him, but a year later, I had convinced myself!” When the
housing market crashed and carpentry jobs disappeared, the pros of nursing
became even more clear. “You can go anywhere in the country and
get a job that pays decently and offers good benefits,” Mr. Thomas says.
