Orthopaedic Surgeon J. Melvin Deese to Present Research to International Organizations

Southeast Georgia Health System is proud to announce that calcaneocuboid ligament sprain research by J. Melvin Deese, M.D., board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and foot and ankle specialist, Summit Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Surgery, a strategic affiliate of the Health System, has escalated to national and international levels.

"Calcaneocuboid sprain is a frequently overlooked cause of persistent and lateral foot pain," says Deese. "The main objective of the research is to increase awareness in the orthopaedic community."

According to Deese, too often patients with calcaneocuboid sprain visit multiple doctors without results. "I have seen patients who have experienced debilitating pain and instability for as long as 20 years. After appropriate diagnosis and treatment, these patients have minimal to no pain after eight weeks, and are back to full function between two and 10 months."

Deese, who is also medical director for the Health System’s Orthopaedic & Spine Center, will present his research this fall at the International Federation of Foot & Ankle Societies (IFFAS) 5th Triennial Scientific Meeting in Chicago, Ill. IFFAS is a collaboration of foot and ankle societies from around the world.

Deese’s research will also be presented at the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) 2014 Annual Scientific Meeting in Chicago, Ill., this fall. This premier educational event focuses on cutting edge diagnosis and treatment of foot and ankle disorders. AOFAS is a medical specialty society comprised of orthopaedic surgeons.
