Hospital Authority Announces New Member and Re-Appointment

BRUNSWICK, Georgia: April 24, 2008 – The Glynn-Brunswick Memorial Hospital Authority is pleased to announce Carla Yarbrough as the newest member and the re-appointment of M.H. “Woody” Woodside for an additional term. Yarbrough was chosen as a county appointee upon the retirement of Linda Pinson, long-time member and chair. She and her husband Alben and their son live on St. Simons Island. The Yarbroughs are the owners of Spanky’s, Inc., while Woodside has spent the past 23 years as president of the Brunswick Golden-Isles Chamber of Commerce.

Yarbrough grew up in rural Bulloch County before going on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in finance from Georgia Southern University. She began her professional career in Statesboro at the Sea Island Bank before moving to positions with Merrill Lynch and Eagle Food Management, also in Statesboro. Yarbrough relocated to the Golden Isles in 1994 when she accepted a financial consultant/advisor position with Merrill Lynch in Brunswick. She remained with Merrill Lynch until May 2001 when she accepted her current position as financial manager of Spanky’s, Inc. In her current job, she is responsible for the management of the corporate office for three, full service restaurants in Brunswick—both Spanky’s locations and Joe’s Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi.

“I am so excited about being chosen to join the Authority,” Yarbrough says. “Gary (Colberg, president and CEO) and the Authority have done a tremendous job here. I’m looking forward to working with the Authority and team members to help our growing community be prepared for current and future medical needs, particularly those of our increasing aging population. Hopefully, I will be able to add something to the mix with my financial background and can bring a healthcare consumer’s perspective to the Authority.”

While volunteering on the Authority is new to Yarbrough, volunteering in the community is not. She is a charter member of the Rotary Club of Glynn County and formerly served as the treasurer then president. Yarbrough completed “Leadership Glynn” in 2000 and is also involved in Keep Brunswick/Golden Isles Beautiful, the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, and is a classroom parent at Lord of Life Christian Montessori School where her son is a student. Additionally, she is the current secretary/treasurer of the Oglethorpe Condominium Association and is the chair of the United Way of Coastal Georgia finance committee. In 2007, the local United Way recognized her by naming her the Board Member of The Year. Yarbrough is also a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow.

Woodside is a native of Clinton, NC, and graduated from The Citadel, Charleston, SC, before serving 23 years as an officer in the Georgia Army National Guard. He is a graduate of the Institute for Organizational Management of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Southeast Georgia Chambers of Developers Council, and twice served on the board of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce Executives Association. Woodside has also served as chairman of the Community & Economic Development Office Region 11 of the Governor’s Development Council. In 2000, the Georgia Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives named him the Kent Lawrence Professional of the Year and in 2008, he was named as one of the “Notable Georgians” by Georgia Trend magazine.

In addition to volunteering on the Hospital Authority, Woodside is a life member of the Brunswick Jaycees, and serves on the Golden Isles Arts & Humanities Advisory Board and the Glynn County Transportation Policy Committee. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Brunswick and a past chairman of the Clean Community Commission. Woodside lives in Brunswick with his wife, Ellen, and they are the parents of two children.

The Authority is made up of nine members—four are nominated from by the City Commission, four are nominated by the County Commission and one is a city/county nomination. Authority members are then appointed by the sitting members. Each of these members volunteers his or her time to oversee the not-for-profit Health System.

In addition to Yarbrough and Woodside, Authority members are Eric Segerberg, MD, Michael Hodges, Laura Cross, Carl Alexander, Robert Griffin, Mark Bedner, and Walter McNeely.
