Health System Surgeon To Operate On Injured Sea Turtle

BRUNSWICK, Georgia: June 15, 2007 – Health System orthopaedic surgeons, Dr. J. Melvin Deese, MD, along with veteranarian Dr. Terry Norton, will be operating on an injured sea turtle at the Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll this Monday morning, June 18, at 6 a.m. (surgery should last about an hour).

The turtle was brought to the Center with very serious injuries. They've nursed him back to health, but he still has a large gash in his head. Dr. Deese will be putting in the same type metal pins (and possibly plates and rods) that are used on humans so hopefully they can get the wound to slowly close over time. He said this case is unusual because the type of injury the turtle has (probably was struck by a boat propeller) is usually fatal.
